Who can forget Whoopi Goldberg leading a group of nuns during mass, singing Petula Clark’s hit, I Will Follow Him? Sister Act and Sister Act 2 were two massive box office earners in the 90s, and the musical has been a hit on Broadway and stages around the world.
Now, South Africa will stage its own production at the Joburg theatre from July. Candida Mosoma will step into Goldberg’s shoes as disco diva Deloris Van Cartier. Kate Normington will play Mother Superior (legendarily portrayed by Maggie Smith in the movie) and Keith Smith will play the pivotal role of Monsignor O’Hara.
For those whose memories have faded, Sister Act tells the story of how Deloris is put in protective custody at a convent after she witnesses a murder. After all, who would look for a disco star among a bunch of nuns? Deloris isn’t satisfied with the rigidity of her ‘sisters’, and begins to use her musical talent and dance moves to breathe new life into the church choir, and gospel music.
This ‘non-replica’ production of the musical will be directed by veteran, Janice Honeyman, with musical direction by Rowan Bakker, choreography by Nicol Sheraton, production design by Declan Randall, costume design by Sarah Roberts and sound design by Trevor Peters.
The New York Times said of Sister Act: “When the wimples start quivering, the pinched mouths break into sunbeam smiles, and the nuns start rocking to raise the Gothic rafters, all’s right in the kingdom of musical comedy.”
Sister Act will run at the Joburg Theatre from 10 July to 16 August, Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm, Saturday at 3pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm.
Tickets range from R200 – R350 and are exclusively available from www.joburgtheatre.com or by calling 0861 670 670.
