[LISTEN] Don Pinnock on his book, “Gang Town”.

The 26es, The Americans, the Hard Livings… These are the names of some of the most well-known gangs on the Cape Flats; groups who terrorize citizens through the drug trade, and violent turf wars, with ordinary residents, often children, caught in the bloody crossfire.

In his book, Gang Town, Cape Town eteran investigative journalist and criminologist, Don Pinnock, writes that the mother city has two sides: one is the most beautiful locations in the world, a lucrative tourist attraction. The second is one of the most dangerous in the world, where gangs of young men rule areas beyond the wealthy suburbs, where drugs and fear are dispensed in equal measure.
