“La La Land”, “Moonlight” lead Golden Globe nominations.

Awards season is fully in swing following the nominations for the Golden Globes, one of the most highly profile awards along with the Oscars. The musical, La La Land, about dreams and dreamers in Los Angeles, leads with seven nominations, including ones for best director (Damien Chazelle), screenplay and lead actor (Ryan Gosling) and actress (Emma Stone). Moonlight, a drama about a young black man growing up in a poor Miami neighborhood, drew six nominations, including best drama, director (Barry Jenkins) and screenplay. Manchester by the Sea is considered a breakout role for Casey Affleck (Ben’s brother), and focuses on a New England plumber coping with horrific loss. It received five nods including best drama.

On the small screen, newbies featured high, like This is UsThe Crown, Stranger Things and Westworld nominated for Best Drama, along HBO stalwart Game of Thrones. In the best comedy category, the returning winner, Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, is up against Amazon’s Transparent, HBO’s Veep, ABC’s black-ish and FX’s Atlanta.

The Golden Globes winners will be announced on January 8.
