Newly-opened restaurant, BEAST Grillhouse, boasts “amazing flame-grilled steak and delectable smoked meats”. So, it was a real disappointment that guests at the official opening never got to sample this. The venue, which is located at Rock Cottage in Randburg, is large yet cosy, with booths and regular tables. The décor is steampunk meets diner.
The menu is varied and chefs have apparently been trained to use specialist-cooking techniques including smoking for that renowned southern flavour and a unique Josper that uses charcoal fire for grilling the meats to perfection. Unfortunately this wasn’t showcased.
On opening night, dozens of guests crowded and jostled around small buffet tables, trying to get at finger food: spring rolls, chicken and coleslaw salad placed on a small piece of lettuce, and sticky chicken wings. The latter was delicious, especially with a kind of ranch dressing. It took another hour though, before another round of different food, which included sliders, were produced, by which time my partner and I had given and were leaving. The live music – provided by popular band Rubber Duc – was too loud for proper conversation, which added to the decision to bail out.
It’s a shame really, because by the looks of it (and my tiny taste), BEAST Grillhouse could be a local mainstay for good, hearty type meals. I might give it another go at some point but for now, it’s difficult to give it a really good rating.
