The heated debate around THAT rape scene in the latest Game of Thrones episode continues to escalate. HBO has refused to comment, as politicians, celebrities and the media have condemned the scene.
On Sunday night the final scene of the show saw Sansa Stark, played by Sophie Turner, brutally raped on her wedding night by her sadistic new husband, Ramsey Bolton (Iwan Rheon). Part of the criticism is that the story was changed significantly from George R.R. Martin’s book, in which a secondary character marries Bolton and is attacked. Some have called the scene gratuitous and unnecessary.
This rape follows the controversy of an episode last season, that saw Jaime Lannister assault his sister and lover Cersei. That scene was depicted depicted as consensual in the book.
Screenwriter, Chuck Wendig, has probably explained it best, in his article We are not things: Mad Max versus Game of Thrones. Stark, who in previous episodes had become a stronger character, has been reduced to a victim.
